September Got a Bit Political for Taylor Swift

“All Too Well” season has officially begun. Leaves are falling, my “Taylor Swift fall” playlist is calling and chai tea cookies are inevitably baking in the ovens of Swifties all over the world. This new season for Taylor means football games, political endorsements and new awards. Inevitably, there will also be heightened rumors about her next “Taylor’s Version” album drop.

If you’re ready to get cozy with Swift songs this fall, I highly recommend you check out this “mornings + Taylor Swift” playlist and keep up with Taypedia for all of the Swiftie content this fall.

WAG Season is Here

Football season? I’m not aware of it. I only know Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs) season, which started with the first Kansas City Chiefs game this season on September 5, where Taylor wore a denim set and side swept bangs

Taylor has always kind of been the queen of fall, and for the second year, she will be on our screens during football games (so the NFL can get more viewers, obviously). I’ve already seen videos of little girls watching football with their dads for the first time with the hopes of seeing Taylor.

Additionally, Taylor was seen embracing her WAG status at the U.S. Open with Travis Kelce and Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. This hangout got surprisingly political, as Brittany had liked a pro-Trump Instagram post right before they met up, causing some fans to see Taylor as a Trump sympathizer. Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan, suggests we try not to give a damn about who Swift is friends with. Keep reading to find out what Swift said about her own political views just days later.

Taylor Swift Endorsed Kamala Harris for President and Trump Reacted

In case you missed it, you can read all about Taylor endorsing Kamala Harris for president here. She said she believes in their policies, and encouraged her followers to research the policies of each candidate so they can vote for the president they truly want in the White House next January. 35 thousand new voters registered after she posted this after the presidential debate on September 10.

After Taylor came out with this endorsement on Instagram, Trump posted “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” on Truth Social. Some have said this will backfire for him; Seth Meyers said it sounds like he’s trying to get “the nine-year-old brother vote.”

Before she endorsed Harris, there were rumors that she was pro-Trump because of an AI-generated image that implied that. Trump posted that image on Truth Social before finding out it was AI-generated. Taylor said in her endorsement statement that AI is a significant part of the reason she chose to speak out about her true beliefs.

Taylor Left the MTV Video Music Awards a Winner

The MTV Video Music Awards took place on September 11 this year, and a number of stories were released about Taylor from that night — the most important stories being that she won seven awards and became the most decorated solo artist in VMAs history:

Song of the Year: Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)

Video of the Year: Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)

Best Pop Video: Taylor Swift (other nominees included Olivia Rodrigo, Camilla Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter)

Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift

Best Collaboration: Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)

Best Direction: Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)

Best Editing: Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)

Like in past years, Taylor had a camera focused specifically on her. One TikTok user who can read lips even attempted to interpret what she said throughout the night. While this is not the first time a camera has been focused on her during an awards show, it seems to be something some fans want even more because of her behavior at the 2024 Grammys, where she was visibly drunk, gossiping with Selena Gomez (remember everyone thought Selena was bad mouthing Kylie Jenner?), and pulling Lana del Rey onstage.

At the VMAs, audiences tended to hyperfixate on her dancing to Katy Perry’s performance and her shocked reaction to Katy saying that the LGBTQIA+ community showed her you can be both “kind and c—.” In my opinion, Swift is likely being used to draw more viewers to the VMAs and/or get more people to talk about the award show after the fact because MTV and music videos in general are becoming less relevant in recent years.

What’s to Come…

In October, Swift will start her next U.S. leg of the Eras Tour, and we can look forward to finding out the surprise songs for those shows. We’ll also hopefully see the re-release of an album — but only time will tell!
