Taylor Swift has officially endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election against former president Donald Trump. Swift posted a picture from her 2023 TIME Person of the Year photoshoot with her cat, Benjamin Button, with a lengthy message about her reasoning for her endorsement. She signed off with the words, “With love and hope, Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.”
The post, which went up soon after the debate on September 10, received more than ten million likes. In her message, Swift explains that she watched the debate and felt compelled to share who she would be voting for because of the effects each of the candidates’ could have on the country.
“I think she [Harris] is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift wrote. “I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”
The response to this endorsement from Trump was not a positive one — he is likely let down by this after being tricked by AI into thinking Swift had endorsed him in August. Not only did he say she will “pay” for this, his campaign also released Eras Tour-inspired pro-Trump merchandise, including friendship bracelets and T-shirts. He also said he likes “Mrs. Mahomes” better anyway.
Swift’s Political History and Potential Impact
Swift is selective about supporting politicians publicly. As anyone who watched her documentary “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana” knows, she used to be private about her political beliefs as she feared it would affect her image. Eventually, though, the issues at hand became too important to her to stay silent.
Ever since then, her beliefs have become a point of interest for voters and politicians alike. Last year, Republicans became convinced that her relationship with Travis Kelce was a scheme to get Joe Biden re-elected. Just this past weekend, her friendship with Brittany Mahomes was scrutinized because Mahomes liked a post about Trump on Instagram.
Additionally, Swiftie political groups have been formed. “Swifties for Trump” leader Jenna Piwowarczyk said the group was formed for fans who are voting for Trump, and is not based on Swift’s own beliefs. “Swifties for Kamala” was also formed before her endorsement of the candidate.
According to Vox, this interest in her politics combined with her endorsement on Tuesday night may or may not affect who wins. The outlet reports that voter registration increases when Swift posts about it, but that other candidates she has endorsed have lost in the past.
Right now, we know that she has at least some impact — her post led to 405,999 newly registered voters.
As for her previous endorsements not leading to her selected candidate winning, that was before the Eras Tour — who knows what kind of power she may hold now? It will be interesting to see how she may move the needle in November.
